Our brief history

Eritrean Bethel Church London (EBC) was formally launched in the summer of 1990, as an independent entity under the name, Eritrean Christian Fellowship in the UK.

Prior to this, in the early to mid 1980s, few Eritrean Christians living in London at the time started meeting for a house prayer. The late 1980’s and beginning of nineties were a time when many Eritrean refugees started arriving in the UK and when the community started to establish itself, it was important to have a church that served Evangelical Christians where they can fellowship and worship together. As a result Eritrean Christian Fellowship was established. The Fellowship started to grow and became a fully established church and was named Eritrean Bethel Church in the United Kingdom, in 1994.

Over the years, the church has been proactive in reaching all Eritreans across the UK and had branches established in other cities such as Leads and Birmingham. A south London branch was also established in January 2002.

The branches that were established in Birmingham and Leeds eventually became independent and continue to operate in such a way. The north and south branches of the church also came together in 1st January 2013, as it was felt that having a main church that celebrates together on Sundays with weekly Bible studies across London is the most effective way of reaching people and growing together.  Two other churches, Aknaf Mdhan and Living Christ, also joined EBC in 2013. Following the unification of the two branches and the other churches, the Lord blessed the church with a bigger building that can accommodate all our needs and the building at Turnpike Lane was purchased in March 2014.

Currently, EBC has more than 300 members, in addition to around 200 children and young people. It is through God’s grace, guidance and leadership that we have reached this far. Glory be to His name.
